POP GOES THE DEMIMONDE

CABARET hasn't always been hoity-toity singers performing the tunes of yesteryear. In its golden age, it took place in louche boites and tackled current hits -- an approach picked up by "Your Hit Parade," which ran from 1935 to 1959 on radio and TV, and featured regulars like Frank Sinatra and Doris Day.
Now the concept lives on with "Our Hit Parade," a hilarious monthly variety show in which you can hear cabaret-style versions of Taylor Swift and Katy Perry songs instead of Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim.
Singer Bridget Everett ("At Least It's Pink"), pianist Kenny Mellman (Herb in Kiki & Herb) and performance artist Neal Medlyn host, surrounded by a parade of disparate guests. Tonight's brave volunteers include the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt and Claudia Gonson, comedian Jackie Hoffman and "Queer as Folk" star Randy Harrison.
After that, anything goes. Once, Medlyn covered Miley Cyrus' "Wake Up America" in a thong made of candy. Last month, teen cast members of the Broadway musical "13" did Britney Spears' "If U Seek Amy," with Everett as the titular character.
"Seeing her with those poor kids was really hysterical," recalls Harrison, who sang Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You." "Though she did keep on a portion of her clothes."
Which is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to both Medlyn and Everett. The latter, in particular, is an unpredictable madwoman onstage, dropping trou without hesitation and molesting a stunned audience.
"Kenny and Neal like to live life dangerously," she says. "They can't drink and drive here since they don't have a car, so they decided to put me in the show."
While each installment is structured as a countdown and culminates with the week's No. 1 song -- i.e., expect some Black Eyed Peas magic tonight -- the set list is fairly accommodating, with guests picking from a list of the top 50 iTunes downloads Mellman sends out.
The best renditions often come from people who are clueless about what's hot or not in the pop world. "Jackie Hoffman is going to perform Taylor Swift's 'Love
Story' " Mellman says, and "she had no idea who Taylor Swift was."
"Our Hit Parade" derives much of its perverse fabulousness from its exclusive reliance on the charts, which makes it feel like a cabaret act curated by 13-year-old girls.
"Teenagers are the new gay men," Everett confirms, laughing. "They get to things first."
"Our Hit Parade" is at Joe's Pub tonight at 9:30. The next show is July 29. |
