Some more details about yesterday's event...
I was immediately impressed w/ how relaxed Randy was! So different from the Q&A session at BTF this summer. He was funny, articulate, thoughtful, knowledgeable and seemed to be enjoying himself. He spoke honestly about his time on QAF, repeating several times that it was a "fluke" that he got the role. He said basically that he fit the physical requirements. I thought it was very funny when he said that his first agent, who negotiated the contract, was a child agent. But he said that was OK, b/c he did look 12 at the time! I also found it interesting that he wished they had made Justin 15 in the series as they did in the British version.
He was asked if the actors had any input w/ the characters and he said that although they would listen, the writers and producers had very specific goals in mind and they wouldn't really stray to far w/ the scripts. He did say that he felt that although there were times Justin was a bit out of character, for the most part he felt they were true to the original vision. He was also quite emphatic when he said that he did not personally agree w/ the Brian philosophy of "It's not about love, it's about *beep* He was asked if there was a "Brian" in his life, to which he smiled sweetly and said, "Uh, no."
It's not about love, it's about fucking“的哲学。
He once again reiterated how grateful he was for the financial stability QAF gave him b/c it allows him to be a bit more discriminating in the projects he chooses. He said it's virtually impossible to earn a living just doing theater in NY. He also admitted however, that it made him a bit "commitment-phobic" in the sense that when you're doing a role it consumes your entire life for the entire run of the show. (I think I remember reading something a while back where Peter Paige said something similar... that he didn't really look forward to the new seasons of QAF so much b/c he would have to be Emmett and not Peter.) So that's essentially why he chooses shorter projects, b/c after a few months he gets his life back.
Perhaps that's why he was so relaxed at this event... he is b/ projects at the moment.
It was interesting to listen to him talking about his work on Wicked. He said he basically rehearsed by the numbers w/ just a stage manager and there were literally numbers on the floor that he followed from scene to scene. He made specific mention that in a big production like Wicked it was important to hit those marks or you could get run over by the scenery! He was adorable when he said after about a week he felt comfortable enough to let his friends come and see it!
He spoke at length to the students in the audience about being persistent in making your self known. He said it can be a humiliating experience, but it's the only way to make any kind of career. That you need to make connections. He did talk about how, in the beginning, he was his only cheerleader. That he had to keep telling himself he could do this, so it was almost a relief when he got cast in QAF, b/c then someone else thought he could do it too. I guess everybody needs a little validation! And although he didn't mention (tAB) by name, he did stress the importance of having an outlet like that so that you can make the kind of projects that you want.
Thought it was a bit funny when he said he auditions for one or two TV shows a year... c'mon Randy, everyone can land some kind of role on a Law and Order!
Although I arrived late for his talk about his time in college, he did mention again that he felt he had to "cobble together" the education he wanted using outside programs and teachers. He truly impressed me w/ his tenacity when it comes to his career.
They showed two QAF clips... the first clip was the final scene from the two hour pilot where Brian essentially tells Justin to get lost. It played on a huge screen behind the stage and at first Randy seemed a bit embarrassed and he didn't really watch. The second clip was the entire Prom Scene. This time he did watch... fairly intently too. He smiled a bit when an audible gasp came up from the crowd during the actual bat attack. Perhaps he was a bit surprised that there were actually some people out there who HADN'T seen it before! At one point the moderator asked if they should end the clip, as it does run a bit long. But Randy indicated that they should continue to the end.
During the Q&A session we learned that he does indeed keep in touch w/ his QAF castmates, although since he is the only one on the East Coast, it's not as often as he would like. He spoke very highly of his co-star in Glass Menagerie - whose name I can't remember now and also of his friendship w/ Tara Franklin. He wants to one day do a Chekhov work and hopes to play Uncle Vanya. He said he's not a dancer when asked about doing . He announced he was playing Andy Warhol in his next project, although he didn't mention the play by name. Oh, and his favorite curse word is *beep*
噢,他最爱的骂人的话是cunt(注,jg1219提示是cunt)。
The interview and Q&A lasted about 90 minutes and then everyone was invited to what was really a very nice reception. I would estimate that about 30 or so people attended. After bolstering his strength w/ a Brownie, Randy was very gracious to greet everyone in what amounted to a reception line of sorts. He spoke to everyone, posed for silly pictures, smiled, interacted w/ everyone and generally seemed to be enjoying himself.
We then talked at the reception about the upcoming Andy Warhol role and that I were looking forward to seeing it. He said that the Shakespeare thing was just the Reading and that the play had already been cast and he was not involvedany further. Someone else asked him about Our Hit Parade and he said he loves doing them, but the earliest he would be back would be January.
The whole atmosphere through out the event was so calming, so relaxing it was wonderful. The Rutgers people were very attentive and several times came to check if he was OK or needed anything. It was just a thoroughly enjoyable event from start to finish... |
